Get a live look at Babe's Beach along Seawall Blvd. in Galveston.
The 15-block stretch of beach west of 61st Street on Seawall Boulevard is named after A.R. “Babe” Schwartz who was born on Galveston island in 1926. As a young boy, Babe worked as a lifeguard on Galveston's beaches and learned to surf. Babe's love for the island and its beaches evolved into his commitment as a state legislator to protect the beaches and the public's free and unrestricted access to the beaches of the entire Texas Gulf Coast. During his tenure in the Texas House and Senate from 1955 to 1980, he authored and passed the Open Beaches Act which did just that.
To celebrate his many accomplishments, Galveston city officials named this stretch of beachfront “Babe’s Beach.”Where the Texas Coast begins.
