One of the only ways to get to the island is to cross the infamous Galveston Causeway, and this corridor over the bridge has plenty of businesses and lodging options for visitors.

History of the Galveston Causeway

The causeway connects the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway and Galveston Bay. Built in 1912, the original causeway served both train and automobile traffic. In 1939, auto traffic was relocated to new causeways built to the west, leaving the historic bridge open to rail traffic.
