The Lone Star Rally, the nation's largest four-day motorcycle extravaganza, is revving up for another thrilling year from November 2nd to 5th on the picturesque streets of Galveston Island.
Admission is free into the festival and to see Lone Star Rally entertainment headliners, including hard rock band Saliva on Thursday, Nov. 2 at 10 p.m., Texas country legend Pat Green Thursday on the Beach Central Stage, and Kevin Fowler on Saturday night at the Beach Central Stage.
As we approach this high-octane event, we want to remind the media of interview opportunities and valuable motorcycle safety tips available for your viewers.
As motorcyclists head south through Houston on their way to Galveston Island’s Lone Star Rally, we want to remind people to be aware of their surroundings and follow these safety tips:
For Drivers
- Take an extra moment to check for motorcycles when changing lanes or turning. Because of its narrow profile, a motorcycle can be easily hidden in a car’s blind spot.
- Monitor your distance from a motorcycle. Brake lights are not always activated when a motorcyclist slows down by downshifting. Allow the following distance of 3 or 4 seconds.
- Stay safe after dark. Increase your following distance, ensuring that your high beams are turned off when you notice an approaching motorcycle, and refrain from passing.
For Motorcyclists
- Wear Protective Gear: DOT-approved helmet, protective clothing, and gloves to reduce the risk of injury.
- Visibility: Wear bright, reflective clothing and use reflective decals on their motorcycles to increase visibility, especially during nighttime rides.
- Safe Following Distance: Maintain a safe following distance to allow for quick reactions in case of sudden stops or obstacles.
- Stay Sober: Galveston County has declared biker weekend a “no refusal weekend.” During a no-refusal weekend, judges, prosecutors, and nurses will be on standby to sign warrants and draw blood if you are suspected of drinking and driving your vehicle or motorcycle.
- Group Riding: For those riding in groups, select a designated lead and sweep rider to maintain order and safety. Signal for turns and lane changes in advance.
- Emergency Contact: Riders should carry a list of emergency contacts and their medical information in case of an accident.
