A Juneteenth Conversation: With the Family of George Floyd
This event commemorates the emancipatory events of June 19, 1865, in Texas in relation to the ongoing movement for justice in the United States today. Juneteenth 2025 will take place shortly after the fifth anniversary of the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis in 2020. It is fitting, therefore, to have members of the Floyd family speak in Galveston about the historical significance of Juneteenth and the pursuit of civil rights today. In partnership with the University of Houston the Rosenberg Library will host a panel discussion with members of the Floyd family and historians David McNally and Sam Collins about these important topics.
Free and open to the public! Light refreshments will be served.
About the Speakers:
- Philonise Floyd is George Floyd’s brother. Since his brother’s murder Mr. Floyd has devoted himself to the pursuit of civil rights and social justice, especially through the Philonise and Keeta Floyd Institute for Social Change, of which he is co-founder and president.
- Keeta Floyd is a community leader with many years of experience in the education and healthcare fields. She is the co-founder and chairwoman of the Philonise and Keeta Floyd Institute for Social Change.
- Sam Collins III is a public historian, past-President of the Juneteenth Legacy Project in Galveston, TX, and a member of the board for the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
- David McNally, the author of eight books, is a Distinguished Professor and the NEH-Cullen chair in History and Business at the University of Houston.
