A Galveston treasure, the 684-acre East End Lagoon Nature Preserve is one of the few remaining sizable tracts of undeveloped coastal prairie and salt marsh on the island. The area is home to a diverse collection of birds and marine mammals that thrive in the brackish waters found here.
For the last several years, the Park Board's East End Lagoon Advisory Committee has made great strides for the area. They include constructing an ADA accessible trail loop with interpretive signage and clearing space for parking and enhanced access to the boat launch to allow for human-powered vessels like kayaks and paddleboards.
In 2022, the East End Lagoon Nature Preserve was recognized at the Houston-Galveston Area Council's Parks and Natural Areas Awards for outstanding management practices in parks and natural areas across the region.
